This page outlines three of my core skills, and talks a little about my academic background.
Technical Writing
I have extensive experience in the development of instructional and reference material for users of computer software. This typically means user manuals, training guides and various forms of online help. Much of this material also incorporates detailed process diagrams and other visual aids.
Copyediting
I have copyedited various articles and manuscripts, notably for Melbourne publisher Australian Scholarly Publishing.
Copyediting is the process of checking manuscripts (books, articles etc.) for content and style errors prior to publication. The nature and scope of the copyeditor's role varies a great deal, depending on the circumstances of the work itself and the requirements of the publisher.
Visual Design
A good communicator should also have an understanding of visual design principles. In my work I place a lot of emphasis on layout, and use diagrams and images of various types to better convey the information.
Academic Background
Before becoming a professional writer I spent many years as a student, completing a BA(Hons) degree at LaTrobe University and then a PhD in English at the University of Melbourne.
My PhD thesis explored the figure of the 'wise fool' as a recurring figure in literary texts from ancient times to the present day. In particular I examined the way in which this literary motif functions in the work of Australian writer Patrick White.
The opening chapter of the thesis (for those who may be interested) can be viewed here.
